Reality TV - 2011 Emmy Nominations

By Diane Anderson-Minshall, About.com Guide July 14, 2011

The Nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today. In terms of reality TV series, many fan favorites were well represented, with American Idol leading the charge with the most nominations (10) and Dancing With the Stars the next highest with seven.

Perhaps American Idol will finally take home an Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program this year after failing to do so each of the eight previous times it has been nominated in the category.

Also nominated for Outstanding Reality-Competition are Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, The Amazing Race, So You Think You Can Dance and Top Chef.

The Surprises:

One of the biggest surprises in the list of nominees comes under Outstanding Choreography. It's no surprise that Dancing With the Stars garnered a nomination for choreography, but the nomination actually went to Mark Ballas.

This despite the fact that judges and fans had problems with the routines he's been nominated for choreographing. Besides, Ballas didn't win Season Twelve, in fact he didn't even come in second. So what about Kym Johnson's choreography? Or runner up Maks Chmerkovskiy's? Did the Emmy folks watch the same Dancing With the Stars Season?

The Snubs:

There were also some obvious omissions from this year's nominees, chief among them The Voice. Despite being a hit with audiences, NBC's singing competition didn't receive a single nomination.

Rather than becoming another American Idol, The Voice broke the mold with unique elements like blind auditions, duet battles and four coaches (superstars Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton) who represented not just pop music but a whole range of musical genres.

And how is it that neither the Kardashians nor The Real Housewives franchise are represented in the Reality TV category? Okay, neither has the educational value of sayMythbusters or Deadliest Catch--except perhaps as a study of the socio-economic chasm that separates America's wealthy from the rest of us.

That's just even more reason we love to watch. After all, the antics of the rich and famous distract us from our own miserable recession-dominated lives; while their catfights, family dysfunction and outrageous behavior captivate us the way only train wrecks and hot messes can.

And it's not that hot messes and train wrecks don't get Emmy nominations: just look atHoarders and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. Guilty pleasure or not, at least The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is entertaining in a way that Antiques Roadshow simply is not.
